Indian Commercial Banking sector is large. Please find below the names of the banks with the number of their respective branches. The information is in alphabetical order other than State Bank of India (SBI) which is a public sector bank but not a nationalised bank. Many make this mistake of classifying SBI as a nationalised bank which it is not. All other public sector banks, other than IDBI Bank are nationalised banks. They were once under private ownership and were later taken over by the Govt of India and put into the service of public and were made national property, hence the word ‘Nationalised’. SBI had seven Associate Banks which have since been merged with it. Another PSB named Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) which had 106 branches also got merged with SBI as at 1/4/2017. The number of branches of SBI is slowly going down as RBI allows shutting down of loss making branches / multiple branches of the same bank in the same location. So, SBI, at No 1, is the prime bank (it is a PSB) with approximately 25% of the banking business in the country. From Nos 2 to 20, which means 19 banks are nationalised banks (these are also PSBs). Please note that the Govt of India has issued a notification for merging of Dena Bank (at No 10) and Vijaya Bank (at No 20) with the much larger in size Bank of Baroda (at No 4). Once this is finished, the No of PSBs will reduce from the current 20 to 18. Some other mergers on similar lines are also not ruled out. At 21st position, we have IDBI Bank which is a new generation Public Sector Bank (PSB). This bank has a dubious distinction of having maximum %age of Non Performing Assets (NPAs) amongst all Indian banks. The positions 22 to 66 (meaning 45 are occupied by MNC Banks. These are popularly known as Foreign Banks also. Their respective registered offices are in some other country and they have either commercial branches or a mere representative office in India. Their presence in India is limited to some large cities only. Some popularly identifiable MNC banks are Standard Chartered, Citibank, HSBC and American Express. Positions from 67 onwards to 75 (9 banks) are held by the New Generation Private Sector Banks. These banks were given licenses in 1993, then in 2003 and subsequently. Positions from 76 to 87 belong to the so called Old Private Sector Banks. We have 3 Local Area Banks (LAB) and these have positions at 88, 89 and 90. The country also has 10 Small Finance Banks (SFBs) and these are at 91-100 positions. Six Payments Banks (PBs) are placed from 101-106 positions. We will speak separately about Regional Rural Banks (RRBs, numbering 56) and Financial Institutions (FIs, numbering 4) separately. All figures are as at 30/06/2018
