Description

Resume is also known by its two other synonyms, namely Bio Data and Curriculum-Vitae or by its abbreviation, CV. Resume Writing is a skill and like any other skill, it can be perfected by practise.

What is a Resume?

A resume is a brief summary of the applicant’s personal and professional experience, skill set, and of formal education. Its main purpose is to showcase your best personality traits to the potential employer. Please keep in view that your resume is your first and perhaps the most important as well as with lasting impression to your prospective employer.

When applying for a job, you’re (in most cases) going to be asked for a resume accompanied by a cover letter. Hence, it is a good strategy to keep a few updated hard copies of your resume in a neat envelope. A soft copy of your resume should also be kept accessible in your personal computer or in your mobile phone. Please do not forget to keep updating your resume every 15 days.

If you manage to create an acceptable resume, you’re going to double your chances of getting selected.

Your First Job? Let’s learn how to write your First Resume:

There is always this writer’s block while writing your own resume. Imagine, when you find it so difficult to write the facts (and some exaggerations as well) about yourself in the privacy of your own home, how difficult it would be to respond to a stranger’s questions in a space alien to you? Hence, in your resume, always write facts, facts and nothing but facts.

You are Unique and so should be Your Resume:

There is so much fear in the mind of students to write an original resume that they copy en-masse any resume which comes to their notice. It is a trend to copy a friend or a batchmate’s resume resulting in only in name change. I have seen students forgetting to change even their Date of Birth or email address while copying the resume, verbatim. In the process, candidates from the same class or the institution look like an assembly line product.

Secondly, the phrase ‘Work Experience’ also looks frightening to those freshly passed out. As a matter of fact, no employer expects you to have a work experience if you have just come out of college. Even up to 2 years of ‘No Experience Zone’ after completion of your formal education should not be upsetting you. Everyone knows that in a country like ours, it takes time to land into a suitable job.

For Your Resume, Some Do’s:

  1. It should be confined to only ONE page, means your resume should be one pager
  2. The preferred format is splitting the sheet into two columns
  3. There should be date at the bottom of the resume, not older than a week
  4. Calibri, 12 font size is appreciated
  5. You are and must be ‘Mobile’
  6. You must enjoy ‘Sales’
  7. Focus on your grades. Highlight if you got good grades
  8. Use good quality paper for your resume
  9. Put a very brief ‘covering letter’ addressed to the advertiser
  10. Read your resume properly before sending it

And for Your Resume, Some Don’ts as well:

  1. No need to give references
  2. It should not be ‘Hobbies’, rather say, ‘interest’ and keep it at 1 only, say reading
  3. No mention of expected salary please
  4. No bogus, non-verifiable claims
  5. No need to list out your achievements from 8th or 10th grade
  6. Do not fold your resume. Use an adequate sized envelope for inserting the resume
  7. No spelling or grammatical errors please. Get it proof read if you are not sure of your writing skills
